My mother, Kathy, was diagnosed with PD in 1986.  She passed away in April, 2020.  Her brain did not produce enough dopamine, which among other things, coordinates the fine motor muscles.  Without that control, people with Parkinson's show the characteristic tremor.  In later stages, people like my mother experience problems with speech and swallowing, balance, and can suffer from a host of related symptoms.  For general information on Parkinson's Disease including symptoms, treatments, care, and more, see:

In 1999, Mom had the Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) procedure - probes implanted in the brain, controlled by small computers, which stimulate dopamine production - still somewhat experimental then.  It helped, lots, but it's not a cure.  For more info:

We walk together, with family and with friends old and new.  Mom would come when she could - there were good and bad days.  But she is there in spirit!

Over 1,000,000 people have PD in the US, approximately 60,000 new each year.  My mother was never cured.  Nor will anyone yet.  But more and more treatments are coming online, studies are being done, and the biggest hope is that people in the future won't have to suffer the way my mom, Kathy, did.
