2019 Parkinson’s Unity Walk Raises Over $1.5 Million in Donations; Now Funding Research
(December 30, 2019) – The 2019 Parkinson's Unity Walk raised and has distributed over $1.5M in Parkinson's research grants. This amount represents donations from 406 teams and over 12,000 donors.
100% of donations continue to support research funded by the following four major U.S. Parkinson's organizations: American Parkinson Disease Association, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, The Parkinson Alliance, and Parkinson's Foundation.
Our website features summaries of the 2019 grants and updates on the studies funded in past years.
The 2019 research projects include the following:
· The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research is using its 2019 grant distribution to investigate a brain imaging technique and its role in improving DBS programming.
· Parkinson's Foundation is working to identify a biomarker that is most sensitive to disease progression in a specific subset of people with Parkinson's disease.
· The Parkinson Alliance is using its funding to expand a Pilot Study examining dual-task training during Physical Therapy for individuals with PD.
· American Parkinson Disease Association is using its funding to investigate the role of a specific protein (RIPK3) in the inflammatory response in the brains of people with Parkinson's disease. Understanding the processes may assist in developing therapies that inhibit RIPK.
The Parkinson's Unity Walk is the largest single-day grassroots fundraiser for Parkinson's disease in the US. It is the day that the Parkinson's community comes together to fight this disease. The efforts of all our supporters-teams, walkers, volunteers, donors, and sponsors-make possible this research that improves the quality of life for those living with Parkinson's disease and, ultimately, finds the cause and cure for this disease.
