The 24th Annual Parkinson’s Unity Walk Raised Over $1.5 Million for Parkinson’s Disease Research

KINGSTON, N.J. (August 13, 2018) -- The Parkinson Alliance announced today that the 24th annual Parkinson’s Unity Walk held on Saturday, April 28, 2018, in New York City’s Central Park, raised over $1.5 million for Parkinson’s research. United in the hope of one day eradicating Parkinson’s disease, more than 11,000 people, and over 450 registered teams, walked together in the largest single-day grassroots Parkinson’s fundraiser in the United States and had supporters from 49 states and over 30 countries.

One hundred percent of funds raised will go directly to research funded by five leading U.S. Parkinson’s disease organizations. “Thanks to our dedicated supporters, we raised more funds than last year, and we can fund more research this year. We can’t say thank you enough to our participants for their fundraising efforts, donors for giving generously in support of research, volunteers for making Walk Day possible, and sponsors for enabling for every donation to go to research,” stated Martin Tuchman, Chairman of The Parkinson Alliance.

According to Carol Walton, Executive Director of the Parkinson’s Unity Walk, “The Unity Walk is more than a fundraiser. In addition to raising much-needed research dollars, there is tremendous energy when caregivers, family and friends, organizations, healthcare experts, advocates, and supporters, walk together alongside patients, to fight Parkinson’s disease as one community. In addition to the 1.4-mile wheelchair accessible walk route, patients and families had the chance to visit our educational booths and learn about treatments and therapies that can be of support all year long,” explained Walton.

Research funded by the Unity Walk supports research efforts for the following five Parkinson’s disease foundations: American Parkinson Disease Association, Parkinson’s Foundation, The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, The Parkinson Alliance, and The Parkinson's Institute and Clinical Center. Sunovion Pharmaceuticals Inc. was the Premier Sponsor for 2018, and additional sponsors included AbbVie, US WorldMeds, Abbott, Adamas, Lundbeck, UCB, Acorda, Boston Scientific, Impax, LSVT Global, and Medtronic.

Information about grants funded by the 2018 Parkinson’s Unity Walk will be posted on our website later this year.
