The 23rd Parkinson’s Unity Walk Raised Over $1.5 Million in Donations for Parkinson’s Disease Research

KINGSTON, N.J. (July 27, 2017) – The Parkinson Alliance announced today that the 23rd Parkinson's Unity Walk, which took place on Saturday, April 22, 2017, raised over $1.5 million in donations for Parkinson’s disease research. Thanks to the enthusiasm, energy, and unwavering commitment of our supporters to raise funds to support research, we are pleased to say that donations received this year exceeded last year. The annual 1.4-mile wheelchair-accessible walk around New York City’s Central Park is the largest grassroots fundraiser for Parkinson's disease research in the country and unites thousands of participants from around the world, to increase disease awareness and raise research dollars.

“Parkinson's disease is a chronic, degenerative, neurological disorder that affects over one million people in the U.S. and we need continuing research to keep advancing our progress until we get to a cure. At the Parkinson’s Unity Walk, we unite with others who have been touched by the disease, and together we fundraise to help fund vital research into Parkinson’s,” stated Martin Tuchman, Chairman of the Parkinson’s Unity Walk.

One hundred percent of donations raised by the Unity Walk go to research funded by six Parkinson’s disease foundations. Recipients of donations are the American Parkinson Disease Association, National Parkinson Foundation and Parkinson’s Disease Foundation (divisions of the Parkinson’s Foundation), The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson's Research, The Parkinson Alliance, and The Parkinson's Institute and Clinical Center.

“With the backing of our supporters, we have funded hundreds of studies since the Unity Walk’s inception in 1994. Thank you to our participants for your fundraising efforts, donors for giving generously in support of research, volunteers for making Walk Day possible, and sponsors for enabling for every donation to go to research,” explained Carol Walton, Executive Director of the Parkinson’s Unity Walk. This year’s sponsors include Abbott, AbbVie, Acorda Therapeutics, CurePSP, GE Healthcare, Hometeam, Impax Laboratories, LSVT Global, Lundbeck, Medtronic, NeuroDerm, UCB, and US WorldMeds.

The Unity Walk will post information on our website about grants funded by the Parkinson’s Unity Walk.
