Julia’s KanJam Tournament for Team Kenny’s Friends

How my idea was developed:
I had participated in a fundraising event that involved playing KanJam to raise money to fight cancer and knew that I wanted to do something special for my Bat Mitzvah project. Since I really enjoyed KanJam, I decided it would be a great activity to incorporate into my event to raise money to find a cure for Parkinson’s Disease.

What went into planning my event’s logistics:
My Mom and Dad were instrumental in helping me plan this event. We decided to hold it on our front lawn and purchased two KanJam game sets to use on the day of the event. The Unity Walk Staff sent me drawstring bags to give out to participants and my Mom ordered trophies online for the winners. We held the fundraiser on Cinco de Mayo, so we brought in food from a local Mexican restaurant and served Tacos and Churros to everyone who attended.

How I promoted my event:
I sent several emails out to all my friends and family telling them about the event and asking them to donate to the Unity Walk, whether they could participate in the tournament or not. This cause is something very important to me because my Papa Kenny has Parkinson’s Disease.  Everyone who knows me knows how much I love him and what an amazing grandfather he is, so they were all eager to donate.

The activities at my event:
KanJam games, prizes, & Mexican food to celebrate Cinco de Mayo.

How I raised funds:
In the emails I sent out, I explained that if people wanted to register to play in my tournament, they could donate $25 or $50 for a team of two. Most people donated more than the registration fee I set.

My event raised: I raised over $3700.00.

Lessons I learned that I would like to pass along to others:
I think fundraising for something that touches your life directly makes it easier to raise money. Incorporating a fun event that people of all ages can play and serving food help make the event a success.
