PUW + Vacation = Raising Awareness

PostcardForBlog_Helaine

Pack your bags! The Unity Walk is on the go; actually, it’s our walkers along with their t-shirts that are traveling. We know many of you have vacations planned and we would love to hear from you. When you pack for your trip, make sure to include a PUW or team t-shirt. Take a photo of you or someone on your trip in the t-shirt, email it to us with a caption of where it was taken, and we’ll post it on our website/social media sites. You’ll continue to raise awareness about Parkinson’s disease and the Unity Walk while you’re enjoying your vacation.

To get the ball rolling, this ”postcard” is from me while on a weekend getaway to NYC. It is taken in Central Park at 6:00am. That is when the free ticket line starts to form for Shakespeare in the Park’s production of Love’s Labour’s Lost. We waited six hours for the tickets and it was well worth it. The production was amazing, we met a lot of great people while we were on line, and the view of Belvedere Castle behind the Delacorte Theater at sunset transports you far from NYC.

The last time I was in Central Park at that hour was for the Unity Walk. Actually, for the Walk we get there much earlier than 6:00am! It’s a lot lighter at that hour in the summer than it is in April.

We look forward to receiving your photos and hope you are all enjoying your summer!

Best,
Helaine Isaacs

Blue skies and positivity

Monday, August 13th, 2012

Not sure that it topped the moment at the Opening Ceremony when Muhammad Ali made his inspirational surprise appearance, but so many songs from the Closing (Concert?) of the 30th Olympiad Games are stuck in our minds this morning.  What a great way to start off this week.

Whether it was ELO’s Mr. Blue Sky performance… then of course Spice Girls’ Positivity.

Yes sometimes all you need is positivity.

The lyrics that might keep on repeating in our office until Friday is… Monty Python’s Always Look on the Bright Side of Life.

We will, we will, rock you… (Monday)!  As we’re tackling another week of event planning, fundraising, and other great things like more continuing ed. classes, you might catch us humming a tune as well…

Keep on singing with us.

The last time I was up this early …

We’ve been asking so much to hear from your families about your stories and actions.  Here’s a little something about us.

Another round of summer greetings… this time from Maine!  Here’s a photo of me waiting for the sunrise.  We’re on Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park on Mount Desert Island, Maine.  At 1,532 feet, my family and I are standing on the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard and during certain times of the year, it is the first place to view sunrise in the United States.

The last time I was up and out this early was… on the day of the 18th Walk!  04.28.2012 to be exact.

(Suddenly remembered something about generators and lights.  Volunteers might remember this early morning shot.)

Speaking of sunrises and brand new days, we’ll blog more soon about the newly opened #puw2013!  In the meantime, how’s your summer going?  Seriously enough about us again, let us know how you and your team members are spending your summer.  Send us your summer and sunrise photos!

Greetings from Jersey – here’s a view from our Kingston, NJ office.  We’ve been remembering to water our flowers, so they’re hanging on… sign that it’s summer, summer, summer time (Will Smith’s Summertime is the song of the moment)!  It’s relatively quiet here in our office, compared to April.  However, we’re still kind of waiting for the real calm to arrive.

While we’re savoring all those trips to the Jersey Shore with our own families, and longer days with after work trips to our local farms (must get as much Jersey corn and tomatoes as possible), and watching as much of the Olympic Games as possible… the next Walk has also been keeping our summer moving really fast.

Just in case you missed the last buzz:  2013 Registration is now open!  Yes the website for our 19th Walk is up.  And for those on social media, even the hashtag is running.  You are encouraged to join the conversation and start using #puw2013 with your tweets.  If you have a few minutes to spare between your jammed pack summer vacation days, please make sure you register early – there are many reasons why you can benefit from signing up before school starts.

Speaking of classes, we’re also attending a few summer sessions, to learn new tools to help you fundraise better.  We’ll let you know about them, as soon as we finish learning about them, ourselves.  Stay tuned.

Okay enough about us, how’s your summer going so far?  (Can you tell we already miss every single one of our 500+ teams?)  Please do leave us a comment and let us know how you and your team members are doing.  How are you all spending your summer?  Don’t forget to send us your photos =).

In the meantime, wishing lots of barbeques, beach getaways, and lazy summer backyard days for your entire family.  We hope you and your team members grab the bug spray and sunblock and spend lots of time outdoors.  We’re hoping to do the same before the fall/winter aka “We got the date!” time rolls around.

Please keep in touch and definitely reach out to us, especially about any of your fall fundraiser ideas.  We’re open year round and haven’t packed our bags yet, though we’re excited about this upcoming overseas trip.

“Someone” is excited about #puw2013 and needs to find my login a.s.a.p.

You know it’s official when the hashtag is declared.  Drum roll please… here’s the first ever #puw2013 tweet.

Here in our office, we’re always asking, is it April yet?  It’s not, of course, but we are still already excited about our next Walk!  It will be #19, we are not getting any younger.  It’s easy to be this excited when every year, we see how much can be done, together.

PUW 2013 Registration is officially open.  The website is now up and running and we can’t wait to work with both long standing and new walkers.  Yes 2013 is open even before receiving The Date.  We do everything we can (they know us really well and we work very closely with them throughout all the planning), however, The Parks Department usually gives us their approval during November/December.

So if you haven’t been able to tell yet, and if you are new to our blog and online communities… first of all… welcome!  And just a little heads up that we are always excited all year round!  But even more so right now, practically doing cartwheels, after seeing those who jumped on the bandwagon this early.  This list of teams this early on is amazing!!!  Thank you to those who have already signed up and seeing their fundraising tickers and thermometers… already rising.  See, the thing is, you have a lot to do with this excitement.

And in case you are reading this and hoping we don’t tell you that the early bird gets the worm (lols!) and wondering why you should start remembering where you kept your 2012 username and password so you can register early (?) … here are a few tips about how early registration may help you.

If for some reason you can’t find the 5-subject college-ruled blue notebook you wrote in your last year’s login, we can help with your username and password.  Or was it the pink notepad one?
