Patients with early Parkinson's disease who were treated with Stalevo® reported better symptom control and improvements in daily activities.

Data from a new clinical trial reported better symptom control and improvements in daily activities in patients with early Parkinson's disease who were treated with Stalevo® (carbidopa/levodopa/entacapone) as compared to carbidopa/levodopa, the most widely-used Parkinson's disease therapy.

Approximately 1.5 million Americans suffer from Parkinson's disease, a progressive and disabling neurological condition, and these results may have important implications in the future treatment of people with early Parkinson's disease. More details regarding the data are included in the release that follows below this message.

Stalevo is an optimized therapy combining carbidopa/levodopa with the enzyme inhibitor entacapone, which extends the presence of levodopa in the bloodstream. Stalevo is currently used only when carbidopa/levodopa is losing effect between doses (referred to as "end-of-dose wearing off"). The new data is intended to support 2008 regulatory filings with the goal of expanding Stalevo's indication to include the treatment of patients with early Parkinson's disease.

Principal investigator, Robert A. Hauser, MD, Professor of Neurology, Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics at the University of South Florida, presented the study results at the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) Annual Meeting in Chicago. Dr. Hauser is available for interviews to share his personal clinical experiences treating people with Parkinson's disease.
