An East Tennessee Fundraiser Nets $2300 for Parkinson's

Two young onset Parkinson’s patients hosted a BBQ dinner and Parkinson’s awareness event to raise money for their teams’ participation in the 2008 Parkinson’s Unity Walk. Held on April 4, 2008, Judy Hensley and Peggy Willocks (both young onset and members of the local Northeast TN Parkinson’s Support Group, Johnson City) hosted the dinner at Trinity Baptist Church in nearby Jonesborough. Both ladies will both be attending the Unity Walk on April 26, 2008 in New York City along with members of their respective teams, USA PD Pals and Margot’s team.

The fundraising dinner was informal and included BBQ pork sandwich, beans, slaw, chips, a drink and dessert for $7 for adults. Over 212 paid donors attended with an additional 25+ volunteers there as well! While donors enjoyed their meal, they were treated to some great local entertainment with a master of ceremonies, singing, playing of musical instruments, skits, and testimonies. A video of the Unity Walk was shown along with slides from previous walks attended. Judy spoke via phone with a Parkinson’s patient all the way across the states in California to let the donors know their money was ‘going to help a long way from east Tennessee.

Entertainment, food, and help needed for the night were all donated, and the proceeds from ticket sales and donations yielded over $2300 that was applied to the Unity Walk teams mentioned above. The success of this event was only possible through the generous effort and work by family and friends who volunteered and made the evening a wonderful time for everyone!
