Mayor Bloomberg Proclaims April 27, 2013 as “Parkinson’s Unity Walk Day”

April 27, 2013 – Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg, Mayor of the City of New York, proclaims April 27, 2013 to be “Parkinson’s Unity Walk Day.”

The Parkinson’s Unity Walk is grateful to Mayor Bloomberg and the City of New York for their recognition of the impact of Parkinson’s disease on over one million Americans, the growth and contribution of the Parkinson’s Unity Walk over the past nineteen years, and the value of the funds the Walk has raised for research. The Parkinson’s Unity Walk is grateful to the City of New York for hosting this event in Central Park.

WHEREAS:     OUR ADMINISTRATION HAS LONG FOCUSED ON IMPROVING HEALTH CARE IN NEW YORK CITY, AND THANKS TO OUR INNOVATIVE PUBLIC HEALTH AGENDA, WORLD-CLASS MEDICAL INSTITUTIONS, AND INITIATIVES TO EXPAND THE USE OF PREVENTATIVE CARE, OUR RESIDENTS ARE RECEIVING THE TOP-QUALITY TREATMENTS THEY NEED. WHILE WE HAVE MADE INCREDIBLE PROGRESS AND NEW YORKERS ARE LIVING LONGER THAN EVER BEFORE, WE ARE WELL AWARE THAT NOT EVERY HEALTH PROBLEM CAN BE SOLVED THROUGH DIET, EXERCISE, AND REGULAR VISITS TO THE DOCTOR. ACROSS THE COUNTRY, MORE THAN ONE MILLION AMERICANS ARE AFFECTED BY THE CHRONIC NEUROLOGICAL CONDITION KNOWN AS PARKINSON’S DISEASE, AND TODAY, MORE THAN 10,000 PARTICIPANTS WILL GATHER IN CENTRAL PARK TO RAISE AWARENESS AND FUNDS FOR RESEARCH TO FIND A CURE.

WHEREAS:     A SLOWLY PROGRESSIVE CONDITION THAT AFFECTS A SMALL PORTION OF THE BRAIN, PARKINSON’S DISEASE CAUSES TREMORS, RIGIDITY, SLOWNESS OF MOVEMENT, AND PROBLEMS WITH BALANCE. WHILE ENHANCED TREATMENT OPTIONS HAVE IMPROVED PATIENTS’ PROGNOSES, THERE IS STILL NO KNOWN CURE. AND THAT IS WHY IN 1994, PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON’S, ALONG WITH THEIR FAMILIES AND FRIENDS, GOT TOGETHER TO HOLD THE FIRST PARKINSON’S UNITY WALK. SINCE THEN, THE WALK HAS GROWN TREMENDOUSLY AND PARTICIPANTS HAVE RAISED MORE THAN $12 MILLION THAT HAS DIRECTLY BENEFITED ORGANIZATIONS SEARCHING FOR NEW THERAPIES TO ERADICATE THIS DEVASTATING DISEASE.

WHEREAS:     FOR ALMOST TWO DECADES, THE PARKINSON’S UNITY WALK HAS GIVEN A VOICE TO THOSE LIVING WITH PARKINSON’S AND ENSURED THAT WE CONTINUE TO MAKE GREAT STRIDES IN THE SEARCH FOR A CURE. OUR CITY IS PROUD TO ONCE AGAIN HOST THIS IMPORTANT EVENT, AND WE APPLAUD ALL OF THIS YEAR’S SPONSORS AND PARTICIPANTS FOR THEIR UNWAVERING SUPPORT OF THOSE WITH THIS DISEASE AND THEIR COMMITMENT TO MAKING PARKINSON’S A THING OF THE PAST.

NOW THEREFORE, I, MICHAEL R. BLOOMBERG, MAYOR OF THE CITY OF NEW YORK, DO HEREBY PROCLAIM SATURDAY, APRIL 27TH, 2013 IN THE CITY OF NEW YORK AS:

“PARKINSON’S UNITY WALK DAY”
