April 2017 - Team Mensch

We were a small crew for our first Parkinson's Unity Walk in April 2004; just our father, mother, Hannah (Jeff's fiancé at the time) and the two of us.  We had privately been wrapping our minds around our father's diagnosis for a couple of years, but we didn't discuss it publicly.  We didn't know much about Parkinson's at the time other than Lauren's first crush, Alex Keaton from Family Ties (Michael J Fox of course), had Parkinson's. The Walk was our coming out moment.

We will admit it - that first Walk was a bit of an emotional roller coaster. Browsing booths, getting information about various treatments and seeing the innovations that become indispensable to Parkinson's patients as symptoms progress was a bit overwhelming. But, being surrounded by so many people all dealing with similar challenges and rallying for a cure was both comforting and inspiring.

It’s that feeling that has kept our team coming back for the past 13 years.  We now treat the Walk as a family tradition - gathering each April to walk and be a part of the Parkinson's community.  Each year we add more hope that a cure is within reach.  And each year we keep adding people to our team and our mission.  It's amazing  to see how we’ve grown! Two marriages added two extended families to our team; two mothers-in-law, fathers-in-law, sisters-and-brothers-in-law all lacing up to walk.  Our grandmother, uncles and cousins joined in as well. And then came the babies! Our dad’s first granddaughter, was born April 30th, 2007 - (two weeks early thanks in part to her very pregnant mother completing the entire Walk the day before!)! Four more grandchildren followed - all now walking to support their Poppi!!

Team Mensch is a proud participant in this year's Parkinson's Unity Walk.  And we vow to continue walking and being a part of this fantastic event until a cure is found.
