2016 Jane Train Walk

This is the third year that Christy Phelps and I organized The Jane Train Walk in Maryville, TN. Our team consists of my family and friends, and trainers and members from Christy’s gym, who come together to raise funds for research to eradicate Parkinson's disease. Each year, the race has grown and we’ve raised more money!

Prior to our walk, T-shirts were sold, and we asked for general donations. We also had a fundraising event at our local Moe's Southwestern Grill. On a designated night, the restaurant gave us 10% of their sales. We advertised and brought in their highest attendance for a fundraising event.  They also held a drawing for a signed Lady Vol basketball, which is a big deal in Tennessee! We reached out to our local paper and they wrote an article that ran in the paper before the walk was held.

Our walk moved to a new location in Pearson Springs Park. We thought for sure we’d have warm weather on a Saturday in April but the day turned out to be sunny but cool. That didn’t keep our approximately 75 walkers from having a great time! There was a one and two-mile option and walkers who donated $20 or more got an event t-shirt.

Christy is my trainer and several trainers from her gym were at the walk. We raised additional funds by giving walkers the opportunity to train the trainers. For a $5 donation, a trainer would do 100 repetitions of a selected exercise – crunches, push-ups, burpees, etc. Watching the trainers sweat brought delight to those who watched and cheered them on. We also had more fun activities for the kids – corn hole, hula hoops, and cake walks. The walk was the culmination of our fundraising efforts. A silent auction was held the day of the walk with donations from friends, family, and local businesses.

We surpassed our goal of $4500 (without any corporate sponsors) and can't wait for new and exciting ideas for next year!
