Passion for Fashion
May 10, 2013 - I was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease 3 1/2 years ago. Six months later I learned about the Parkinson’s Unity Walk. I decided to attend and my life changed that day. I was overwhelmed by the compassion, camaraderie and overall sense of "family" that existed at the Walk. It opened me up to a whole other side of Parkinson's, a side filled with the knowledge that I am not alone. It is this very reason that I have come back each year and this, being my third year, will not be my last. I have made a promise to myself and my team, that each year I will try to top the previous year’s fundraising total. Lo and behold, it's worked!
This year was different. I wanted to give people something for their donation; something that would remind them of this great fundraiser for Parkinson's research. I think I succeeded. It all began with a brainstorming idea to create a fundraising event – “Passion for Fashion”, a fashion show for Parkinson's. I hadn't seen one done before and dived head first into the idea. First order of business was forming the committee. Then I secured a venue. With both of those items taken care of, I began the planning stages and delegated tasks to the committee. After many months of obtaining prizes for the silent auctions, finding the fashion provider, fittings, selling tickets, making goody bags, and writing speeches plus many other laborious tasks…...April 9th finally arrived. Nervous that I would not be able to entertain 166 guests I needed to take a deep breath and continue.
Miraculously, the night went off without a hitch! There was dinner, auctions, vendors, a DJ, and best of all the most glamorous fashion show with models escorted by gentlemen in tuxedos. People couldn't wait to ask if we were doing it again. Best of all we raised over $10,000 for Parkinson's research. Those nerves turned into feelings of joy. A successful fundraiser indeed! Lesson learned - don't be afraid to host an event. It is hard work but it pays off in the end.
