Team DominACHIN - 3rd Annual Washers Tournament
The 3rd Annual Washers Tournament took place on March 18th this year. We had 64 people playing washers and trying to win the chance to have their name on the coveted (albeit converted bowling trophy with a golden washer atop) "Henry" trophy. It is named after Mike's 86 year old dad, Henry who was one of the winners our first year. Tickets to be a player cost $30 and all others were admitted for $10. Everyone attending received a Team DominACHIN koozie with the letters FUPD on the back side which of course stands for "Friends United against Parkinson's Disease."
We had numerous raffles such as autographed Larry Bird and Paul Pierce Lucic pictures; Answer is Fitness gym membership for a year; neon signs; wine, wine and more wine; New Balance sneakers; etc. We also had a silent auction that had a Larry Bird/Magic Johnson print autographed by Larry Bird, a hand painted stool, a sangria basket, and an awesome neon sign.
Big brothers being who they are towards little brothers opened up the opportunity for a new money maker. Zach's hair had been growing since the summer and had developed into quite a mop. A day before the tournament, Ben began a bidding for the chance to cut Zach's hair at the fundraiser. It netted an extra $150 to the cause and was quite entertaining to see Zach looking like a monk. Mike Cornetta said it was the best money he’s ever spent and he enjoyed it immensely. Mike even played auctioneer and raffled off an evening for 10 in a suite at an Islanders game next year.
Danielle did all the cooking for the event and we feasted on pulled pork, buffalo chicken lasagna, grilled veggies, potato salad, fruit, beans......mmmm......Our niece made dozens of cupcakes in our favorite colors of lime green and blue each with a mini washer atop with "Team DominACHIN" written on each. Many others contributed with baked goods. We held the tournament at a little local bar that donates their time and space and even their tips. We sold our new 2012 edition of our Team DominACHIN t-shirts. The place was a sea of lime green, the atmosphere was friendly and the attitude of everyone was, “Let's do this for MIke and for Parkinson's research.” All in all a success...another $7000 for research. Not bad for such a fun day.
